There is nothing quite like the feeling of receiving a stunning bouquet. However, without the proper care, those vibrant petals can start to wilt within just a few days. The good news? With a few simple florist secrets, you can double the lifespan of your delivery.
The crucial first steps upon arrival
The first 15 minutes after your flowers arrive are the most important. Never just drop them into a vase of tap water.
First, ensure your vase is impeccably clean—bacteria is the number one enemy of fresh flowers. Fill the vase with room-temperature water and dissolve the packet of flower food that came with your delivery. This food contains a perfect mix of sugar (for nutrition), acid (to maintain water pH), and bleach (to fight off bacteria).

The science of the 45-degree cut
Before placing your flowers in the water, you must trim the stems. Use sharp, clean scissors or a knife to cut about 2 to 3 centimeters off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle.
Why an angle? Cutting straight across causes the stem to sit flat against the bottom of the vase, blocking the flower from drinking water. An angled cut maximizes the surface area for water absorption. Also, be sure to strip away any leaves that fall below the water line, as submerged foliage will quickly rot and cloud the water.

Location, location, location
Where you display your arrangement plays a massive role in how long it lasts. Flowers thrive in cool, stable environments.
Keep your vase away from direct, harsh sunlight, heating vents, or drafty windows. More importantly, never place your bouquet next to the fruit bowl in your kitchen. Ripening fruits (especially apples and bananas) emit ethylene gas, an invisible hormone that forces flowers to age and drop their petals rapidly.
Daily maintenance routine
To hit that 10-day mark, you need to show your flowers daily love:
- Change the water: Empty and replace the vase water every two days.
- Re-cut the stems: Every time you change the water, snip another centimeter off the stems to reopen the water vessels.
- Remove wilting petals: If one flower in the arrangement dies, remove it immediately so it doesn't spread bacteria to the healthy blooms.

Expert tip
If you notice your flowers starting to look a little "tired," try the fridge hack. Place your vase in the refrigerator overnight (just make sure there is no fruit inside!). The cool temperature slows down the aging process, allowing your blooms to perk back up by morning.
